James W. Pashek
RLA
PRESIDENT

Jim founded Pashek Associates in 1986.  He received a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Penn State University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh.  He has held an AICP certification for Planning and CPRP as a certified Park and Recreation Professional. 

Jim has developed an innovative public input process for the formation of a “vision” for communities.  This unique process has led him to training communities in meeting facilitation throughout western Pennsylvania and in Eastern Europe under the auspices of the Heinz Endowments.  He has also given lectures on community planning, parks and recreation planning, sustainability, and ADA accessibility.  Other accomplishments include several articles published in both “Pennsylvania Recreation and Parks” and “The Township Planner”.

Jim has received awards for planning excellence, including awards from the PA Planning Association, ASLA PA/DE chapter and two Governor’s Awards for Innovative Planning.  

Jim is a volunteer member of his Borough’s Park Board and on the Advisory Board for Chatham’s department of Landscape Architecture.  He is also active in his church, currently serving as chair of their building renovation and expansion committee



John O. Buerkle, Jr.
RLA, AICP, ASLA
VICE PRESIDENT

John Buerkle leads the firm’s Parks and Recreation Studio.  John has been at the firm since 1989, after he completed his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Penn State University. His experience in the planning and design of greenways, trails, open space, and parks has helped the firm become well known in the park and recreation community.  John has managed over $20 million dollars of park and recreation improvements throughout the tri-state area.

John is active in presenting at workshops and conferences focusing on greenways and trails, skate parks, and general park planning and design.  He has presented at a number of the annual Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society Annual Greenway and Trails Summits, Pennsylvania Recreation and Park Society Annual Conferences, and was a speaker at the 1st International Trails and Greenway Conference held in 1999 in Pittsburgh.

John is active in his community.  He has served various appointed positions, and he is a former council person in Conway Borough.  John and his wife are active band, soccer, baseball, football, and dance parents.  When not participating in those activities, he enjoys camping, biking, fishing, and spending time with his family in the outdoors.


Nancy Lonnett Roman
RLA, LEED 2.2 AP
TREASURER

Nancy obtained her BSLA from Pennsylvania State University. She has been with Pashek Associates since 1989. She manages site design and development projects of varying sizes, exploring creative site design emphasizing environmental sensitivity and a site's unique character, for schools, parks, urban spaces, streetscapes, and hospitals.  

In the spirit of giving, and to encourage others to contribute to the environment and their communities, Nancy contributes to the scholarship fund established through the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees, titled “Pashek, Lonnett, and Buerkle Scholarship in Landscape Architecture.” The scholarship is available to Landscape Architecture majors who have a demonstrated interest in environmental issues.

Nancy has received design awards through the ASLA, AIA, and Cleveland Competition for projects ranging from site and park design, intergenerational play spaces, and planning green neighborhoods. She is a member of AIA Pittsburgh and is a founding member of the Beaver Borough Shade Tree Commission.

In her spare time, Nancy enjoys community volunteering, gardening, and music.


Robert M. Good
CPRP, CPSI, AFO
TREASURER

Bob received his Bachelor of Arts Degree, in Recreation Administration, from Bethany College, Lindsborg, KS. He also obtained his Master of Science, in Public Administration, from Slippery Rock University. His various other education includes:

  • West Virginia University, Aquatics Facilities Management School
  • North Carolina State University, Recreation Revenue Sources Management School
  •  North Carolina State University, Arts Management School
  • North Carolina State University, Park Maintenance Management School
Bob joined the firm in 2001. He directs the firm’s recreation planning activities, including comprehensive recreation, park, and open space plans, specialty plans, and feasibility studies.  He specializes in business planning, park and recreation management, maintenance planning, intergovernmental cooperation, school-community partnerships, and recreation facility and swimming pool operations.  He also works with master plans, grant applications, needs assessments, and public participation. 

Bob’s professional certifications include being a Certified Park and Recreation Professional, a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, and is an Aquatic Facilities Operator. Bob manages the Pashek Associates’ Mercer County Office. Outside the office, Bob enjoys spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids.
 

Sara Thompson
RLA

Sara Thompson received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and a Master of Science in Landscape Architecture from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.  During her studies, she worked on projects for the Center for Brownfield Studies and Center for Community Design Research.  She studied urban pedestrian corridors for a semester in Barcelona, Spain and focused on small town main street revitalization for her master’s thesis.

Since 2004, Sara has worked on a variety of projects at Pashek Associates including park planning and design, playground design, community planning, sustainable trail design, and urban design.  She has been instrumental in creating a digital imaging studio at Pashek Associates, creating before and after photos to better understand the implication of design and planning decisions. 

Sara is on the Board of the Pittsburgh Trails Advocacy Group (PTAG) and is on the GTECH Social Capital Council.  She is a Tree Tender for Tree Pittsburgh, an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the City's vitality by restoring and protecting City trees.  She also volunteers for the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, and is on the Allegheny River Greenway Committee.


Michael Kotyk
MLA

Mike obtained his BA in Geography, with minor in Geographic Information Systems, from Slippery Rock University. During that time, he studied abroad in Spain and Ireland. He went on to Chatham University to receive his Master of Landscape Architecture. Mike started working for Pashek Associates in 2004. His roles in the firm include being a Graduate Landscape Architect and GIS Services Manager. Since he started with the firm, Mike has worked on Community Planning Projects, Comprehensive Recreation, Park, and Open Space Plans, Greenway Plans, Trail Feasibility Studies, and Park Master Plans.

Outside of the office, Mike is the managing partner of the OTB (Over the Bar) Bicycle Cafe on Pittsburgh’s South Side. In 2007, Mike purchased and developed this very successful business by focusing on Pittsburgh’s growing bicycle and pedestrian efforts. He is married with two children, boy (3) and girl (9 months).

Mike is also active in the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He is the founder of South Side Bike/Ped Committee, an organization that advocates for bicycle and pedestrian safety, better connections, and more bicycle friendly businesses; and he sits on the Design Review committee for the South Side Local Development Company.


Marcy Campbell
RLA

Marcy obtained her BS in Business from the University of Pittsburgh and her Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Pennsylvania State University. She has been with the firm since 1996.  

She has a strong background in site development which includes experience in school developments, parks and recreation facilities, and commercial developments. Her skills include land use inventory and analysis, schematic design and construction document preparation, and master site plan development.  Marcy is also well-versed in stormwater management and erosion and sedimentation control plan preparation and permitting.

Marcy’s interest outside the office include gardening, skiing, and mountain biking.



Tricia Johnson
RLA

Tricia is a graduate of the landscape architecture program at Ball State University.  She has a strong background in site development, which includes experience in parks and recreation facilities, commercial developments, streetscapes, and school projects.  Her skills include land use inventory and analysis, schematic design, master site plan development, and construction document preparation.  Tricia is also well-versed in stormwater management and erosion and sedimentation control plan preparation.

Tricia has been involved on many projects within the site design and recreation planning studios since joining Pashek Associates in 2001. She has attended a variety of seminars and workshops related to her field.

In her spare time, Tricia enjoys spending quality time with her husband and three kids and being a part of their many activities and interests.


Matt Shaffer
CAD TECHNICIAN

Matt attended Pittsburgh Technical Institute and obtained his Associates Degree in Specialized Technology in Computer Aided Drafting. He has over 6 years of experience with CAD and has been with the firm since 2005.

His day-to-day duties include entering data into the CAD system while manipulating drawing characteristics to create multiple drawings for every phase of the production process, including planning, design, and construction of projects. Matt creates drawings for site analysis, master planning, design development and construction documents using various versions of AutoCAD software.

In his spare time, Matt’s enjoys photography, playing with his dog Riot, and is an avid Pittsburgh Penguins hockey fan.


Ollie B.
OFFICE POOCH

Ollie is a Brittany spaniel owned by Nancy Lonnett Roman.  He works part time at the office usually sleeping or chewing on bones.  Ollie played a small role in helping the design of Brady’s Run Dog Park.  He has been visiting the park since he was a pup and gives it four paws up.  He also likes lunch time walks in Historic Allegheny Commons Park.



Tuesday
OFFICE DOG

Tuesday, a pit bull and lab mix, was rescued by Sara Thompson and her husband from a shelter in January of 2010.  She works part time at the office playing tug-of-war, fetching balls, sleeping, and looking cute.   
 Tuesday loves treats and lunch time walks in Historic Allegheny Commons Park.   She also likes to lick everyone, a lot.
